Arrian's Alexander the Great - In a New Voice

To celebrate the newly published Landmark edition of Arrian's biography of Alexander the Great, the NYU Center for Ancient Studies and the Reading Odyssey are hosting an evening conference aimed at exploring why the writings of Arrian are central to our understanding of Alexander the Great and how the new Landmark edition will expand our understanding of Arrian.

James Romm Biography

James Romm is the editor of the Landmark Arrian - The Campaigns of Alexander. He is also an author and the James H. Ottaway Jr. Professor of Classics at Bard College in Annandale, NY. He specializes in ancient Greek and Macedonian history, but has also worked on imperial Rome. He has held the Guggenheim Fellowship (1999-2000) and various fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, and is currently Birkelund Fellow at the Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center for Writers and Scholars at the New York Public Library (2010-11). He lives in the Hudson Valley with his wife, artist Tanya Marcuse, and three children.

Eugene Borza Biography

Eugene N. Borza is Emeritus Professor of Ancient History at the Pennsylvania State University.  He has authored or edited several books on ancient Macedonian history and culture, including "In the Shadow of Olympus: The Emergence of Macedon," and has played a leading role in the controversy over the evidence from the royal tombs uncovered at Vergina, Greece. He contributed four of the appendices to the Landmark Arrian.  

Kurt Raaflaub Biography

Kurt A. Raaflaub is Professor Emerius of Classics and History at Brown University. He studies the social and political history of the Roman republic; the social, political, and intellectual history of archaic and classical Greece; and the comparative history of the ancient world. Recently, his research has focused on the society and politics of Homer's epics, on the origins and workings of Athenian democracy, on war and peace in the ancient world, on the purpose of writing history in Greece and Rome, and on the origin and function of Greek political thinking. 

Robert Strassler Biography

Robert Strassler is an independent scholar and businessman; founder and editor of the Landmark series - Herodotus, Thucydides, Xenophon, Arrian and forthcoming titles.
